USAID’s Basic Education Program works with schools and communities to develop 21 century skills for children in primary school grades one through nine. It also assists Kosovo education institutions to undertake reforms such as: decentralization of the Municipal Education Directorates, improving the quality of teaching and learning outcomes of primary school students, and improving teacher professional development through school-based training.
USAID, through its four-year New Opportunities for Agriculture (NOA) Program ficuses on creation of market linkages, increasing and diversifying products, improving food quality and safety, increasing affordable and accessible credit, in addition the activity support the sector through small grants to farmers, agicultural enterprises and association.
The Community Action Initiative Program (CAIP) supports 30 non-majority communities north of the Ibar River and 10 in the south to improve quality of life and develop the confidence that residents have a viable future in Kosovo. The program’s three target areas include
A capable and well-regulated legal profession is essential to strengthening the Rule of Law in Kosovo. With the completion of the appointment process for judges and prosecutors, the passage of key laws governing the judiciary, and the restructuring of the courts, Kosovo must now raise the bar for the legal profession by enforcing standards for ethics and discipline, and preparing the legal workforce for the needs of the future. Beginning in 2012, USAID’s Kosovo Legal Profession Program took a new approach to the development of the legal system.
Since 2001, the National Albanian American Council with support from USAID has implemented the Hope Fellowship Program in Kosovo. The program was designed to increase the leadership skills of women in decision-making positions in government institutions and civil society. This was especially important in Kosovo’s post-conflict context, as women were underrepresented in both the public and private sectors.
USAID’s Democratic Effective Municipalities Initiative (DEMI) assists municipal governments and officials to refine their skills, increases transparency, and improves cooperation with citizens.
