Good Education - Quick Facts

Adult literacy: 37.1% (Female 29.2%; Male 47.6%) 1

During 1995-1997, the Government of Cambodia spent 2.9% of GNP on education. By comparison, the figure for other ASEAN countries was as follows:  Burma (1.2%); Indonesia (1.4%); Laos (2.1%); Vietnam (3.0%); Thailand (4.8%); and Malaysia (4.9%)

Cambodia’s net primary school enrolment/attendance for 1992-2001 is estimated at 65%.3

On average, there are 45.8 students per teacher and 66.4 students per classroom (1.5 classes per classroom).4  

The national primary school repeat rate is 9.6%.  In remote areas, it rises to as much as 17.2%.4

Nationally, the transition rate to lower secondary is 87.6%; the transition rate to upper secondary is 60.1%.4
