Programs
1. Wildlife Management Program
The objective of the wildlife program is to increase socio-economic
benefits of communities living adjacent to Parks and Reserves from
conservation and sustainable management of wildlife and natural
resources. The program targets community group ranches members,
large-scale ranchers, tour operators, tour guides, entrepreneurs
in tourism sector and community based organizations (CBOs).

based businesses such as community wildlife sanctuaries, tented
camps, ecolodges and cultural centres; ii) Building the institutional
and technical capacity of community based organizations to carryout
nature based business such as management and marketing, CBO networking

areas such as rhino protection, ecological monitoring, human/wildlife
conflicts as well as support to Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) initiatives
outside the protected areas. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS)
is the lead-implementing agency in conjunction with African Wildlife
Foundation and Pact Inc. and East Africa Wildlife Society. The program
is implemented in four geographical areas namely Laikipia, Amboseli,
Taita Taveta, and Kwale.
2. Kenya Coastal Marine Initiative (KCMI)
The objective of this program is to set the foundation for Kenya
marine policy. A two-track approach is adopted in implementing the
program namely i) national level initiatives and ii) local level
initiative.
The national level initiative involves raising the
awareness of opinion leaders and key decision-makers in the government
on the economic and ecological significance of the Kenyan coast
as well as the need for coordinated sectoral management. Specific
activities include support to workshops, study tours and technical
studies. Typical studies include legal and jurisdictional basis
for Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) in Kenya, local district
strategic action planning guidelines, special area management planning
guidelines, guidelines for coastal tourism development and investment
and, coastal law enforcement guidelines.
At
the local level, activities encompass the development and implementation
of ICM initiatives at Jomo Kenyatta Beach, Ngomeni, Port Reitz Creek,
Shimoni, Diani-Chale and Malindi-Watamu in the form of mangrove
replanting, development of mooring buoys, rainwater harvesting,
fish processing/marketing, crab farming, coral cover surveys, fish
counts and institutional capacity building for targeted marine focused
community based organizations.
The Coast Development Authority (CDA), National Environmental
Management Authority (NEMA) and KWS are the key GoK agencies implementing
the program in conjunction with Pact Inc.
