North Eastern Pastoral Development Program (NEPDP)

NEPDP is a three-year project worth approximately US$2 million, and implemented by the African Union-Inter Africa Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR). The goal of NEPDP is to improve household income and food security in four districts in North Eastern Province (Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo,) and the neighboring district of Tana River through strengthening private sector-led livestock marketing and animal health care delivery systems. The objectives will be met by building the capacity of key local institutions such the Kenya Livestock Marketing Council (KLMC), Livestock Traders Marketing Council – Kenya (LTMS-K), District Livestock Marketing Councils (DLMCs) and their member associations and Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs). NEPDP will support four components to achieve meaningful impact among beneficiaries including, institutional strengthening, advocacy and lobbying for policy improvement to promote access to lucrative domestic and international markets, provision of financial and other non-financial services including conflict mitigation, and improved disease surveillance and animal health care system.

NEPDP falls under USAID/Kenya’s SO 7, Increase Rural Household Incomes. The program supports Intermediate Results 7.2: Increased agricultural trade 7.3: Increased access to business support services for Medium and Small Enterprises (MSEs) and 7.4: Increased effectiveness of smallholder organizations to provide business services to their members and represent their business interests. It will target three groups of beneficiaries: 1) pastoral associations in NEP involved in the livestock trade; 2) Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs) who can provide basic animal health services in remote areas; and 3) rural pastoral households located within NEP.

With the Government of Kenya (GOK) and other development partners now gearing to provide development assistance to NEP and other ASAL areas, NEPDP will be able to complement activities designed to improve pastoral livelihoods in the targeted districts.
