Caption: A plaque at the entrance says "Kirkuk Central Fire Station which has been renovated as a gift to the people of Iraq from the people of United States of America, U.S. Agency for International Development." The Kirkuk Central Fire Station was was looted of most of its contents; windows and doors were broken; wiring pulled out, the back-up generator was destroyed; most of the building was damaged and equipment was destroyed or stolen. The ability of the fire department to respond to fire emergencies in this city of approximately 1 million inhabitants was severely compromised. One of Iraq Transition Initiatives objectives is to enhance capacity of local and national governments, the $51,320 grant from USAID's Office of Transition Initiatives provided the assistance needed to restore the department to working condition.
