Caption: DART Abuse Prevention Officer, Jean Geran, (also a Foreign Affairs Officer at the State Department's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor) carries out an assessment of a mass grave in southern Iraq. The location of the mass grave was marked by a black mourning flag, 20 kilometers southeast of Basrah. Human Rights Watch, which has visited the site, estimates the mass grave may contain the remains of several hundred people. Despite the hazard posed by unexploded ordnance in the area, some residents have begun to unearth graves, looking for missing relatives.
