Iraq Community-Based Conflict Mitigation Program

Program Snapshot

  • Award Amount: $16.4 million
  • Start/End Dates: September 2007 - June 2009
  • Implementer: Relief International

Supporting Iraqi's Conflict Mitigation

The Iraq Community-based Conflict Mitigation Program aims to support Iraqis in developing constructive approaches to mitigating conflict in their communities and strengthening their capacity to contribute to peace building. This is done through quick-impact projects which encourage dialogue between identity groups that have become increasingly divided over the past years, and creating new spaces for Iraqis to work together in the pursuit of peace. ICCM is currently functioning in all 18 governorates specifically engaging youth, women, and other traditionally marginalized religious and ethnic groups.

Program activities are grouped into three primary components: (1) community conflict assessments and subsequent peace-building projects, (2) the development of an Iraqi Peace Foundation (IPF) consisting of academic and civic leaders, and (3) youth peace-building initiatives carried out by the creation and facilitation of youth groups.

The ICCM program continuously evaluates short-term and long-term impacts that the program activities have on peace-building efforts in Iraq. Ultimately, the project aims to measurably reduce levels of tension among local citizens and groups and create a sustainable network of conflict mitigation leaders throughout the country.

Program Activities:

  • The program completed 64 community conflict assessments throughout all 18 governorates of Iraq and implemented 127 follow-on projects addressing the identified conflicts.
  • The program implemented one-day conflict mitigation training courses for various local government bodies to improve performance and member interaction.
  • The program has completed 34 youth empowerment initiatives.
  • The program assisted in the creation and peace building work of an 82-member Iraqi Peace Foundation with representation from all 18 governorates.
