Implementing AIDS Prevention and CARE (IMPACT) Project

Duration: September 1999 - September 2007

Partners:

  • Family Health International (FHI)

Geographic Focus: Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Maharashtra, Manipur, Nagaland, Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu

Description:

India has an estimated 2.47 million people infected with HIV/AIDS, the third most in any country. Besides care, support and treatment requirements for infected persons, children infected or affected by HIV/AIDS demand a specialized response.

USAID’s Implementing AIDS Prevention and Care (IMPACT) project in India was one of the first projects that reached individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS and respond to the needs of orphans and vulnerable children. The IMPACT project :

  • Educates orphans and vulnerable children about HIV, deters drug use, builds life-skills that limit high-risk behavior, and provides care and support to children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS
  • Employs preventative measures tailored to change high-risk behavior among vulnerable populations
  • Provides counseling, testing, and home-based care and support to HIV-positive persons and their partners
  • Consults with national, state and local governments and local community organizations to form sound policies, protocols and methods for serving citizens
  • Gathers important data about the epidemic and formulates ways to contain and treat it
  • Contributes to the decrease in HIV prevalence in the areas in which it operates.

President George W. Bush has made the fight against HIV/AIDS a priority. In 2003, the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief initially committed an initial $15 billion over five years in 100 target countries (including India) to mitigate the disease. The Emergency Plan streamlines and coordinates efforts of all U.S. Government agencies, including USAID activities, to battle HIV/AIDS. It is the largest health initiative of its kind in history.
