India, the world’s largest producer of mangoes, exports less than one percent of its mango crop and loses most of its harvest to poor storage, packaging, processing and distribution. Meanwhile, the international demand for mangoes is growing and India’s domestic market is experiencing an increased demand for processed goods. Capitalizing on these trends is an important step to help India’s agriculture sector, which employs more than two-thirds of the country’s workforce, develop its potential.
USAID’s Partnership for Food Industry Development helps India tap domestic and international markets and improve food safety, quality standards and food processing. Facilitating a mix of private-public partnerships, the program gives India access to U.S. expertise and technology to:
- Identify new domestic and international markets;
- Develop better distribution and marketing chains;
- Help the sector meet necessary food safety and quality standards in target markets;
- Address constraints in production;
- Identify and facilitate resources for establishing cold chain management, appropriate post-harvest handling and processing, logistics and packaging; and
- Monitor trends that impact Indian exports.
