USAID India Grants Rs. 6.2 Crores for Tsunami Relief in Tamil Nadu

NEW DELHI -- The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission in India
today announced two grants for a total of Rs. 6.2 crores (USD 1.4 million) to non-governmental organizations in India to provide clean water to persons affected by the tsunami in Tamil Nadu.
The funds will go to CARE USA and Catholic Relief Services (India), two organizations with
well-established humanitarian relief programs in India.
CARE USA and Catholic Relief Services (India) will assist with the emergency provision and rehabilitation of potable water and sanitation services to Indians affected by the tsunami. CARE has received Rs. 2.9 crore (USD 650,000), while Rs. 3.3 crore (USD 750,000) has been committed to Catholic Relief Services (India).
This support supplements an earlier Rs. 22.5 lakh (USD 50,000) contribution to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund and a Rs. 22.5 lakh (USD 50,000) grant to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to support the tsunami relief operations of the Indian Red Cross announced by Ambassador Mulford December 28, 2004.
