Life-saving assistance to Indians affected by the tsunami is transitioning from relief to rehabilitation efforts that help people return to normal life. USAID funds activities that are highly focused, targeted at those most in need, and delivered by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that work closely to avoid duplication. USAID is restoring fishing and other livelihoods, and ensuring adequate, healthful living conditions for displaced people in temporary settlements. Community disaster preparedness and U.S.-India collaborations in local planning and emergency response are possible areas for further investments.
