Trade and Investment

USAID activities in Trade and Investment provide technical assistance to help Honduras meet its commitments under the Central American and Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR). USAID is also helping to enhance the country's ability to conduct independent trade, to invest, and to be more competitive.

USAID is reinforcing Honduran efforts to upgrade laws, policies, and regulations in the areas of trade and investment; and assisting small farmers and enterprises to take better advantage of increased trade opportunities under CAFTA-DR.  The programs provides resources to implement support for the CAFTA-DR in key areas such as market access, intellectual property rights, sanitary and phytosanitary inspection, dispute resolution assistance, improved trade analysis, and rules and regulations supporting free trade.

USAID places strong emphasis on improving competitive, market-oriented growth by increasing productivity and creating a link between agricultural production in rural areas and markets in urban areas. In addition, USAID is providing demand-driven assistance in macroeconomic and financial policy formulation.  It is also helping the Honduran government to do trade and investment policy research and analysis and support the formulation of policies to enhance competitiveness, and natural resource management.

USAID is focusing on activities that have a direct impact on economic growth. Policies being addressed by USAID include:

  • simplified procedures for business start-up;
  • antimonopoly measures, and
  • trade and financial policies.
