HIV/AIDS

Honduras’s overall HIV prevalence rate is 0.68% of the total adult population. Yet, specific most-at-risk populations have significantly higher prevalence rates that range from 4 to 10%. Within the general population, the age group most affected is between the ages of 15 and 39, presenting implications for productivity and development. USAID programs focus on HIV/AIDS prevention, improved service delivery, care, and support among the most-at-risk populations. In HIV/AIDS prevention USAID is working with the local NGOs to provide education, counseling and rapid HIV testing. USAID also supports mass media education campaigns targeted to the most-at-risk populations. In addition, USAID supports commercial distribution of low cost condoms in high risk areas.
Although prevention remains the major focus, the program also supports the Ministry of Health’s monitoring and evaluation systems to better track the HIV/AIDS epidemic and collect timely information for better programmatic decision-making. USAID also provides assistance to improve the quality of services in government HIV/AIDS treatment facilities. This includes providing training and update of service delivery protocols. As part of this effort, the program assists the Government of Honduras in the proper management of HIV/AIDS medications and commodities by strengthening forecasting, inventory, warehousing, and distribution processes. |
