Food Security

The vast majority of rural poor are landless laborers who may be seasonally employed. High unemployment rates, low incomes, and the elevated cost of the food are the most influential factors in food security. High levels of preventable child illness, complicated by high rates of chronic malnutrition and anemia are especially severe in rural areas.
USAID’s food security program improves child survival and nutrition through programs that promote infant and young child feeding, exclusive breastfeeding, and food distribution. It also focuses in the prevention and treatment of preventable childhood disease, and improvements in prenatal care, to reduce problems due to malnutrition in children. USAID’s efforts are linked the Honduran Government’s national strategy to reduction maternal and child death rates. |
