USAID officially began operating in Montenegro in 2001, although its post-conflict efforts supporting civil society and the media were launched in 1998 from USAID offices in nearby countries. Following its official opening, it increased its programs until it had 11 running concurrently in 2006. USAID closed in 2013 with three major programs, its Economic Growth Project, its Good Governance Activity, and its Persons with Disabilities Initiative.
USAID completed 17 major programs and thousands of smaller projects in Montenegro, impacting virtually every municipality in the country between 2001 and 2013.
USAID’s operations in Montenegro closed in late 2013 after the country made significant strides to improve its residents’ lives and set it on a path toward European Union (EU) accession. Its final three programs were its Economic Growth Project, its Good Governance Activity, and its Persons with Disabilities Initiative.
