Civic Education Among Youth
In 2007 USAID launched a campaign in Guinea to encourage peaceful methods of expression. The Civic Education Project (PEC) sponsored by USAID is strengthening the Guinean population’s democratic values drawing particular attention to youth.

    USAID through its partner IFES is sponsoring several workshops in the seven regions of Guinea from June 19 to the 26 to train election workers.

    Between May 29 and 30 in the provincial capital of Kindia, a USAID-sponsored workshop on the management of electoral system, in partnership with the International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES), drew a wide array of participants including members of the Independent Electoral Commission, the Ministry of Territorial Administration, ECOWAS, the French Embassy, and the United Nations.

The USAID funded project Faisons Ensemble organized a high-level workshop in Kindia from March 23 to 30 to improve the legal and regulatory frameworks governing the pharmaceutical supply chain in Guinea. The objectives were to review the existing legislation and regulations, note shortcomings, and draft new laws and regulations

In 2009, the 23 VCT (voluntary counseling testing) centers in Guinea that are functioning were re-supplied with HIV/AIDS test kits and laboratory materials by USAID through the Faisons Ensemble project.

Faisons Ensemble combines literacy with civic education:

Faisons Ensemble projects uses adult literacy as a vehicle for civic education, with the objective of increasing civic participation in local governance.
To date 7,127 people have received adult literacy training that includes lessons in basic civic education. Over half the learners, 4,023 (56%) are women.

USAID's civic education taps into folklore:

The new civic education curriculum will be introduced in Guinea’s secondary schools in the 2009-2010 school year. The curriculum contains Guinean fables, proverbs, riddles, poems and folktales relevant to civic education that were collected over the past year. Thus enriched, the civic education curriculum will play an important role in molding the minds and beliefs of Guinea’s future leaders for many years to come.

  • The USAID funded project EngenderHealth, plans to officially launch the newly created fistula care site in Labe on Thursday May 21st, 2009. This important event will gather representatives from the urban commune of Labe, civil society organizations, local and national partners involved in the implementation of the 4 components of the Guinea Fistula Care project: Prevention, Treatment, Reintegration and Local Democratic Governance.

  • A World Food Program shipment from the U.S. is expected to arrive at the Conakry port on March 13,2009. The ship is carrying 3,816 Metric Tons of U.S. rice, oil, and peas. This food is provided to Guinea through USAID’s regional Office of Food for Peace based in Dakar. The food will be distributed through WFP’s local partners for WFP’s school feeding, food-for-work, and supplemental feeding programs. Their geographic focus is Lower Guinea.

    USAID funded a program on youth and women participation in election through IFES(International Fundation for Electoral System).

    The youth dialogues on elections are scheduled for: Kissidougou on March 3-4 and Mamou on March 6-7.

    The women's training program in advocacy and lobbying techniques are scheduled in Kissidougou on March 13-14 and Mamou on March 16-17.
