USAID program improves school performance at Kanga
Kanga Local Authority Primary School in the Northern Region of Ghana is one of the many schools that have benefited immensely from QUIPS. Before the selection of the school in the 2000/2001 school year for the QUIPS program, the school's performance was very poor. The pupils' mastery was so low that teaching English language in the upper primary was difficult.
Mr. Godwin Mfum, the school's headteacher, recalled that before the introduction of the QUIPS program in the 2000/2001 school year, the academic performance of the pupils left much to be desired. The performance was so low that teachers felt disappointed and did not accept posting to the school. The results of the Performance Monitoring Test (PMT) conducted by the GES in the year 2000 confirmed this. Out of 42 schools from the district that took part in the PMT, Kanga Local Authority Primary placed 41st. A year later, after the USAID intervention, Kanga primary placed first among the district's schools in the 2001/2002 PMT results.
The program has contributed very much to the sudden rise in the school's PMT results. The scores increased from a combined Mathematics and English average of 9.7% in 2000 to 71.7% in the 2001/2002 school year.
Describing the reaction of the teaching staff, Mr. Mfum said that "we became overwhelmed and went ecstatic with joy when the PMT results for the year 2001/2002 were officially declared on 11 July, 2002. It showed a tremendous improvement following [USAID] intervention and dedication to duty by my teachers." Indeed, the dedication of the teaching staff, community and the district, with support from USAID and CRS, led to this outstanding turnaround!
