Minority Serving Institutions Program

Mission

The Minority Serving Institution Program's mission is to create an environment where a more diverse and increased number of qualified U.S. Minority Serving Institutions become USAID partners by successfully competing for a greater share of the agency's acquisitions and assistance.

Vision

The Minority Serving Institution Program accelerates a greater number and diversity of qualified Minority Serving Institutions participating in USAID's community of partners.

Description of MSI's

Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) are institutions of higher education in the United States that either historically or currently have ethnic minority student enrollments of more than 25 percent. Individual Executive Orders have been issued requiring federal agencies to increase access and opportunities for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs).

Awards and Activities

The U.S Agency for International Development (USAID) is the U.S. government's primary instrument for promoting development and reducing poverty in the world. This is accomplished by catalyzing the full range of America's public and private capabilities and resources. Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) successfully compete for both primary awards and sub-agreements and contracts to provide technical assistance and training to developing countries. The following charts represent some of the major awards and activities with Historically Black and Tribal Colleges and Universities and Hispanic Serving Institutions.
