Approaches: The national program in collaboration with the Ministry of Health focuses on developing and improving policies and guidelines on key family health issues, improving management and planning systems, and strengthening the partnership between the public and private sectors. The national level interventions are complemented by a regional integrated family health program is implemented in Borgou/Alibori region in northern Benin where the health statistics are worse than the national averages, quality of services is low and numerous constraints limit access to services. In addition, a regional malaria control program is carried out in Ouémé/Plateau on the Nigerian border, where malaria rates are the highest in Benin. To accompany its national condom social marketing program, and to strengthen the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS in Benin, USAID/Benin is currently funding a program to support the National AIDS Control Program. The program, entitled “Benin HIV/AIDS Prevention Program (BHAPP), is implemented by Africare and covers the following five components: advocacy, behavior change, STI case management, behavioral and epidemiological surveillance, and condom distribution through community health workers and peer educators.
