AGSP recipients signing "I Love You" to the Africa Education Initiative, Porto Novo School for the Deaf, Louho, Benin. |
The Porto Novo School for the Deaf located in a rural community, is the only school in Benin that serves deaf children (it also serves hearing children). Out of 39 AGSP scholars who attend the school, 18 are deaf. The participation of hearing-impaired girls in the AGSP has strongly impacted community perception of the learning potential for hearing challenged children, as well as for girls in general.
Successful implementation of the AGSP in Benin has leveraged much needed public and private support for girls, notably the partnership between the AGSP contractor, WEI and internationally renowned singer Angelique Kidjo's Batonga Foundation which will provide scholarships to 229 vulnerable girls so they can continue on to secondary school.
Benin illustrates how the AEI works differently in each of the 40 countries where it operates, addressing key issues identified by local partners, within the core strategic areas of AEI: teacher training, scholarships, and textbooks. All of the areas embrace inventive solutions and incorporate HIV/AIDS prevention and community involvement. AEI's teacher training programs represent the first formal teacher training received by the majority of Beninese teachers.
