IMPROVING LEARNING/TEACHING IN THE CLASSROOM

"Education is the foundation of development and democracy -- in every culture, on every continent. And we'll work to give Africa's children the advantages of literacy and learning so they can build Africa's future".
President George W. Bush

Pedagogical materials and computer equipment donated to the Benin Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.

Thanks to USAID assistance under the Africa Education Initiative (AEI), more than 300,000 primary school children will have new materials that will enhance learning and teaching.

On July 29, 2005, US Ambassador to Benin Wayne E. Neil co-chaired with Ms. Karimou Rafiatou, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, the donation ceremony of pedagogical materials and computer equipment to the Beninese Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.

The pedagogical materials, a total of 605,040 items, consisted of workbooks, reading booklets, wall charts and teacher's guides in French, Math, and Science.

The pedagogical materials were produced collaboratively by Hampton University, Virginia, St Augustine's College, North Carolina, and the Beninese Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education under the Textbooks for A Global Society (TAGS) project. This project is a component of the President's Africa Education Initiative (AEI), the purpose of which is to increase access to quality basic educational opportunities in Africa, especially at the primary school level. In Benin, an evaluation of the USAID-sponsored Benin primary education reform program has highlighted the problem of poor performance.
