Program Successes: Food Security

  • Since 2000, 1,345 kilometers of roads have been upgraded for all-weather traffic. This reduces transport coasts by 50%. These roads provide access to markets and services, improving conditions for remote communities.

  • Since 2000, 277,200 poor people in 420 villages have benefited from USAID's flood-proofing program. The targeted villages are among the most chronic flood-prone and food-insecure areas of the country. The beneficiaries also receive health, hygiene and nutrition training through mothers' clubs.

  • 1.4 million trees have been planted along over 1,200 kilometers of road, which prevents erosion and creates employment for poor women.

  • 134,000 more people have safe drinking water, free from arsenic and pathogens.

  • 243,000 more people have access to hygienic sanitation facilities.

  • Fish production has been improved in more than 1,600 ponds, increasing household nutrition and incomes.

  • Nearly 2,000 poor households are now involved in small livestock rearing. Approximately 4 million small livestock have been vaccinated.

  • 9,000 small farmers have been trained in improved agriculture practices.

  • The Government of Bangladesh has restructured its public food distribution system to focus on the needs of the poor and hungry.

  • Since 2000, the Government has not imported commercial food grain. The private sector is now expected to meet the country's requirements.
