Energy

Clean-energy project activities will form a core component of the Bangladesh Low Emission Development Strategy (LEDS) program.

In agriculture, a reliable energy supply is critical for value-added processing and irrigation and storage, and is one of the limiting factors in agricultural development throughout Bangladesh.

Energy efficiency measures will also help to decrease the unit cost of agriculture products, thereby decreasing prices and improving the accessibility of the rural poor to food.

Reliable energy will improve the quality of basic health services by ensuring vaccine and medicine cold chains and the effective use of medical equipment that rely upon electricity.

USAID continues to build upon past successes of energy projects in Bangladesh. For example:

  • USAID assistance to the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission in setting energy tariffs, developing accounting systems, improving quality of services and customer awareness has been instrumental in promoting energy efficiency and renewable-energy use.

USAID, through its energy programs:

  • Provides support for various energy and resource-management authorities, ministries and commissions in the Government of Bangladesh;
  • Collaborates with NGOs, customer groups, academics and business chambers to achieve clean-energy objectives;
  • Uses science, technology and innovation in helping achieve its clean-energy goals.

In addition, future clean-energy activities will support the dissemination of solar water pumps that will help decrease irrigation costs for critical crops.
