Between January 15th and 19th, 2007, an Environmental Management and Regulation 216 Workshop was organized for USAID's implementing partners to enable and build partner organizations' capacity to monitor and apply mitigation measures where necessary in order to ensure compliance with USAID regulations, and reinforce and raise awareness with regards to the use of best practices and sound design of environmental activities. Although USAID/Angola does not have a specific environmental program, environmental considerations must be taken into account by their programs in order to avoid possible impacts on the environment.
Apart from USAID partners organizations, government officials from the Ministry of Urbanism & Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, as well as other relevant international organizations, such as Chevron, participated in the workshop. Workshop participants visited USAID-funded activities in and around Luanda, such as the electricity and water programs in Kilamba Kiaxi, the Cajueiros Voluntary Counseling and Testing Clinic, as well as the Farmers Camgonga Cooperative of Mabuia, an association for farmers created with the support of USAID through the Cooperative League of USA.
