On December 7th, 2007, Junior Achievement Angola celebrated the second graduation of high school students from the Junior Achievement Company Program in Angola. Some 160 students from 8 schools around Luanda successfully completed the program. The Vice Minister of Youth and Sports, the Junior Achievement Vice President for Africa, and the USAID Mission Director addressed the students during the ceremony.
Junior Achievement is a global organization active in more than 100 countries around the world. It educates youth on the value of free enterprise, business and economics through hands on experiences. Through the Company Program, students in their final year of high school learn to start a business by doing it, and acquire a good understanding of what it takes to be an entrepreneur. They organize, operate and liquidate an actual business enterprise, with the support and guidance of their teachers and volunteer consultants from the local business community. Volunteers from Esso, Coca-Cola, Odebrecht, Chevron, Alcatel-Lucent Technologies, Ginásio Konceito, USAID and the U.S. Embassy worked with students.
In Angola, Junior Achievement is financed by the U.S. Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). It is also supported by several businesses in the private sector: Esso Angola (Exxon Mobil’s local affiliate), Odebrecht, Coca-Cola, Alcatel-Lucent Technologies, Chevron Corporation, and Ginásio Konceito.
