April 1999
- The purpose of the AfricaLink visit to Nigeria was to finalize plans for a West African cover crops experiment to be facilitated by the IITA in Ibadan, and to visit one or two key research sites in Nigeria that will be participating in the experiment.
- In the course of the visits within Nigeria, observations about general research institution networking were made. A few of these are shared here.

- It was learned that a World Bank program had paid for CODAN radio/data telecommunications equipment and installation at many research institutions throughout Nigeria. The typical system included a CODAN 9360 SSB transceiver with 9114 power supply, a CODAN 9001 fax/data interface, and a CODAN IPC 500C Interconnect device.
- At the Institute for Agricultural Research in Zaria, a telephone line is attached to the interconnect device, then to the transceiver, which presumably means that an incoming call from within Zaria town could be patched through the radio to a distant site.

- Also at the IAR, a telephone cable links a fax machine to the 9001 fax/data interface, then to the transciever, meaning that faxes can be sent out or received via radio.

- Similarly, a telephone cable links a computer modem to the interconnect device, presumably meaning that email could be exchanged via radio. Staff seemed familiar only with the fax capabilities of their system, however.
- A contact in Abuja was identified with whom it may prove fruitful to discuss whether email capabilities can be added to this existing system.
