TIRANA, May 18, 2012 Today, USAID launched a new five-year project “Planning and Local Governance” in Albania” (PLGP) which will work in close cooperation with the Government of Albania and local governments to disseminate and institutionalize practical and effective methods for municipal management and to further support decentralized governance in Albania. At the ceremony mayors of 15 local governance units signed Memorandums of Understanding with USAID’s project to lay out the project’s five year assistance program.
TIRANA, APRIL 20, 2012 Today, chief judges of all of Albania’s district and appellate level courts gathered to participate in discussions of USAID and other donor initiatives to improve court operations in Albania. U.S. Ambassador in Albania, Alexander A. Arvizu, Minister of Justice, Eduard Halimi, HCJ Chief Inspector, Valbona Vata, Head of the EU Delegation to Albania, Ambassador Ettore Sequi, and Head of the OSCE Presence in Albania, Ambassador Eugen Wollfarth, delivered the keynote speeches at the conference opening.
LEZHA, MARCH 30, 2012 The U.S. Ambassador in Albania, Alexander A. Arvizu, and the Minister of Justice, Eduard Halimi, inaugurated today the first installation of the court digital audio recording system at the Lezha District Court. Implemented with funding from USAID as part of the Albanian Justice Sector Strengthening Project (JuST), and in close partnership with the Albanian government and the judiciary, this marks the beginning of the implementation of a major technological advance in Albanian courts that helps enhance their efficiency and transparency.
TIRANA, MARCH 15, 2012 With the support from the USAD’s Competitive Enterprise Development project (Rritje Albania) and Microsoft Albania, Albania held its first Microsoft Imagine Cup Competition to support technology and innovation to advance economic and social developments in Albania. USAID/Albania’s Mission Director, Joseph Williams, and Albania’s Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, delivered opening remarks at the competition.
TIRANA, FEBRUARY 9, 2012 Today, USAID held an event to mark the launch of a new four year, $3.4 million program, that will provide support to the Bank of Albania and Albania’s Financial Supervisory Authority. Assistance will support the institution’s supervision of Albania’s banking and insurance sectors which is important for economic stability and growth. USAID/Albania Mission Director, Joseph Williams, FSVC President and CEO, J. Andrew Spindler, and the Governor of the Bank of Albania, Ardian Fullani delivered remarks at the event.
TIRANA, JANUARY 20, 2012 With the support from the USAD’s Albanian Justice Sector Strengthening Project (JuST), the National Chamber of Advocates (NCA) presented to its members today the first issue of Albania’s only professional bar journal, “Avokatia.” The publication is one of a number of USAID-supported activities designed to help strengthen the professionalism and academic training of Albanian lawyers.
TIRANA, DECEMBER 22, 2011 Ambassador Arvizu delivered remarks and congratulated students at Thursday’s graduation ceremony at the Rectorate of Tirana University in Tirana. The School has made important contributions to improving Albania’s justice sector, providing initial and continuous education for Albanian magistrates (judges and prosecutors). To date, 133 judges and 99 prosecutors have graduated from the School.
TIRANA, DECEMBER 21, 2011 On December 16, USAID/Albania co-sponsored Albania’s first national conference on the country’s garment and footwear industry. Albania's garment and footwear manufacturers are important to the country’s economy both in terms of exports and employment. Yet, the future sustainability of the industry depends on their transitioning from fasson production to full cycle operations in order to meet EU market demands for quick turnaround time on small orders of high quality finished products.
KORÇA, OCTOBER 26, 2011 Today USAID’s Albanian Justice Sector Strengthening Project (JuST),in cooperation with the Albanian Foundation for Conflict Resolution (AFCR) held the first of three roundtables in Korça, with representatives from the Regional Chamber of Advocates, the local business community, and civil society organizations to encourage the use of mediation as an extrajudicial, faster and less costly alternative for resolution of conflicts between parties.
