Kabul, Afghanistan | - Ten women and eight men received advanced diplomas in Public Policy and Administration from Kabul University on Wednesday to become the first graduates of a national leader development program financed by the United States.

“The graduation of these 18 students is a major achievement for Afghan public administration,” said Obaidullah Obaid, Afghanistan’s Minister of Higher Education in graduation ceremony comments.

The American people, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), support a two-year curriculum at the school through the $92 million Afghanistan University Support and Workforce Development Program.

Starting in 2012, USAID has used a portion of these funds to provide funding for Kabul University’s Masters of Public Policy and Administration program (MPPA).

“I am proud my country has helped prepare these young people for this day,” said Carolyn “Teddy” Bryan, USAID/Afghanistan acting Mission Director. “To you graduates, I say: ‘Well done! You are the leaders of tomorrow. Your country’s future is in your hands.’”

The MPPA program is designed to strengthen Afghanistan’s public institutions by producing a new generation of Afghan leaders in management and public administration.

The MPPA curriculum focuses on modern managerial techniques, foreign language, workforce development and computer literacy. Twenty-eight students are currently enrolled in the program.

USAID developed the MPPA program in conjunction with Afghanistan’s Ministry of Higher Education and Kabul University.
