2007 Second Quarter Report: Public Diplomacy
On April 28, 2007 Mr. Walid Maalouf was a keynote speaker at the US-Canadian regional meeting of the World Lebanese Cultural Union in Montreal. He met with the Honorable Diane Finley, Canadian Minister of Citizenship and Immigration and other Canadians and Arab officials who attended the event.
On April 30, 2007 The United States Consulate lead by Ms. Susan Bell organized for Mr. Maalouf meetings with members of the Middle Eastern Canadian community and Muslim Canadian leadership during which forthright conversations took place regarding democracy, peace, stability, prosperity and self determination in the broader Middle East and North Africa. Mr. Maalouf participated in a video conference with the public affairs officers in all the US Consulates in Canada, and was interviewed by several local radio stations.
On May 23, 2007, the Office of Public Diplomacy for Middle Eastern and MEPI Affaires received Mr. Hussam Muslih, Mr. Bassam Ouwies and Mr. Sam Ghanem of the American Association for Palestine. They met with Mr. Jeff Grieco, Acting Assistant Administrator for Legislative and Public Affairs and Walid Maalouf, Director of Public Diplomacy for Middle Eastern and MEPI Affairs. The group proposed a vocational training program for Palestinian youth and was briefed on the on-going efforts of USAID in the West Bank and Gaza.
On June 25, 2007 the Director of Public Diplomacy was a host in Al-Jazeera’s weekly “Min Washington”. Mr. Maalouf spoke of USAID efforts in the broader Middle East and North Africa and the President‘s Administration policies regarding democracy in that region.
