Strengthening the Participation of People with Mental Disabilities in Kosovo Society

Funding Period: September 2008- September 2010

Funding Amount: $200,000

USAID/Kosovo supports the Mental Disability Rights Initiative (MDRI), which is building on the outcomes of the previous MDRI Initiative for Inclusion, and working to further strengthen the advocacy movement for people with mental disabilities in Kosovo.

The program aims to

  • strengthen the capacity of local groups of and for people with mental disabilities to participate in civil society and development programs
  • work to government entities on policies that affect people with disabilties
  • establish an independent Mental Disability Rights Committee
  • raise awareness about the human rights of people with disabilities and the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities


Inclusive Education Through Active Learning

Implementing Partners: United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)

Funding Period: September 2008- September 2009

Amount: $48,500

USAID/Kosovo is supporting the Inclusive Education through Active Learning project, implemented by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in partnership with the Ministry of Education, the Finnish Support Group, and TEMA, a local NGO working on inclusive education.

USAID supports the project's training program in seven municipalities. Activities include

  • Train primary and pre-primary teachers to develop curriculums and activities that accommodate children with special needs
  • Raise the awareness of parents, communities, and stakeholders on the importance of inclusive education
