Support to Self Advocacy for Rights and Equal Opportunities of People with Disabilities in Upper Egypt

Implementing Partners: Handicap International

Implementing Partners: DPOs in 4 governorates in Upper Egypt

Funding Period: October 2008 - September 2011

Amount: $300,000

In Egypt, Handicap International manages a program that builds the capacity of disability advocates to organize and become officially acknowledged counterparts of public authorities and other key stakeholders. In turn, these advocates promote the development and implementation of policies and programs targeting the inclusion of people with disabilities at local, national, and regional levels.

The specific program activities include

  • providing training for DPOs, local authorities, and service providers on program management, advocacy, disability rights, and public awareness of those rights
  • providing small grants to DPOs in areas related to advocacy and inclusion
  • working directly with DPOs to support the registration process so they can be officially recognized by the government as NGOs
