Health, Water, and Sanitation

Program Goals

  • Expand primary health care services in 20 counties of Bahr el Ghazal (including Abyei), Upper Nile, Equatoria, Nuba Mountains, and Southern Blue Nile from 30 percent to 60 percent.
  • Strengthen County Health Departments, support the Secretariat of Health in establishing a southern-wide epidemiologic surveillance system, and train county medical officers (including in the 20 counties targeted by USAID).
  • Fund World Health Organization Polio eradication campaigns, including national immunization days and surveillance.
  • Integrate HIV/AIDS into broader health programs; expand access to prevention services in 20 targeted counties through expanded behavior change communication and voluntary counseling and testing; strengthen the New Sudan National AIDS Council, the Secretariat of Health, County AIDS Councils, and County Health Departments to develop, lead, and coordinate appropriate responses to HIV/AIDS.
  • Support for HIV/AIDS prevention Activities in Yei/Rumbek including sero-prevalence surveys, support pilot Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) centers in eight locations, peer education, and care and support through community-based groups.
  • Expand prevention care and support activities using multi-sectoral approaches.

Highlights of Achievements

  • Assessments and selection of 20 focus counties.
  • Mobilization of SPLM office and logistics in Nairobi and Rumbek.
  • Expansion of Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) services in Yei and Rumbek.
  • Training of Religious Leaders in Yei (September 6 - 10, 2004).
  • Increased program coordination between humanitarian and development partners.
