Agria "Celida" Espiritu Santo is 31 and lives in her 3x5 m (9x15 ft.) room in one of the wooden barracks. She has five children and a parrot named 'Cuca.' Her husband is an auto mechanic and the only source of income for this family of seven. Their fragile room is barely standing, and it has been their only shelter since the hurricane. They have lived in this room for almost three years are counting the days to move into their new small concrete blockhouse. They are waiting for the Dominican government to finish up with the water and sanitation connections to the main lines. In the meantime families like the Santos go every day to their new houses to paint and tile their floors and bathrooms. They are taking charge of their property and are very proud of having contributed 120 hours per family to the construction of their new homes.
"We are going to have water and a safe roof over our heads. My children will have space to play and my little 'Cuca' will be very happy in our new home."
