The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) supports the Government of Pakistan in building the infrastructure needed to improve Pakistan’s economic enabling environment, increase its resilience, and expand its education and health services.

SECTOR BACKGROUND

Construction of critical infrastructure enables local governments to improve public services and increase their credibility with constituents. USAID’s current infrastructure projects are implemented through partnerships with local governments to enhance capacity and ownership. For example, USAID partnered with the local government to construct a new system to provide reliable, clean drinking water directly to the homes of 300,000 residents of Jacobabad for the first time in decades. The same program is now building a new wastewater system for the city and has trained a team of municipal technicians and managers to operate and maintain these services.

SECTOR PRIORITIES

EDUCATION AND HEALTH: SCHOOLS AND HOSPITALS

New schools constructed with support from USAID are providing safe learning spaces for children to learn to read under the Pakistan Reading Project in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Sindh provinces. USAID also partnered with four universities to construct new university buildings as a part of the U.S.-Pakistan Centers for Advanced Studies.

To support improved health services countrywide, USAID partnered with local governments to build specialized training centers to train health workers in providing better quality care. The program has already rebuilt and equipped more than 60 damaged health centers and hospitals, including a new state-of-the-art burn and trauma center in Peshawar.

WATER AND SANITATION: MUNICIPAL SERVICES

Through the Municipal Services Programs, USAID is partnering with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh provincial governments to construct and repair drinking water supply, sanitation, and solid waste management systems. These partnerships strengthen local government ownership for maintaining municipal service systems. USAID is also supporting the city of Peshawar to create a management information system to efficiently track and maintain municipal services.

TRANSPORTATION: ROADS AND BRIDGES

In collaboration with USAID, provincial governments are improving conditions for long-term development and promoting stability by extending the presence of government services throughout their regions. These collaborative infrastructure programs mitigate instability within the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region, including Balochistan, through the construction of roads, schools, water, energy, and irrigation systems. New roads enhance commerce, and tollways generate revenues to maintain them. New power transmission lines and grid stations bring electricity to drive economic growth in isolated communities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
