Press Release

Yesterday, Administrator Samantha Power met with Dr. Laura Elena Carrillo, Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID) Executive Director, to discuss USAID and AMEXCID’s strategic partnership for advancing economic and social opportunities for the people of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.

Administrator Power and Dr. Carillo reviewed progress so far under Sembrando Oportunidades, the U.S.-Mexico development cooperation framework in Northern Central America. Since this framework was announced in December 2021, USAID and AMEXCID have begun coordinating initiatives for youth employment and agricultural programming in Central America, and Administrator Power and Dr. Carrillo discussed opportunities for further expansion of this partnership. In June, USAID and AMEXCID will hold an event in Honduras to mark the one year anniversary of the signing of our Memorandum of Understanding on development cooperation in Northern Central America. Administrator Power and Dr. Carrillo also discussed the importance of the upcoming Ninth Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles in June 2022, where President Biden, President Lopez Obrador, and leaders from throughout the Western Hemisphere will come together to make advances on building a sustainable, resilient, and equitable future for all those in the region.
