At the 9th World Water Forum, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced a new initiative to help water service and equipment providers strengthen water security in Senegal.

Through the Scaling Up Renewable Energy program, the United States Government, through USAID, will provide grants of up to $150,000 to support the conversion of diesel water pumping systems to solar. Additionally, USAID will provide grants of up to $100,000 to support the conversion of manual water pumping systems to solar.

“The United States Government is pleased to support market-driven solutions powered by renewable energy to help rural populations access water sustainably.” said USAID/Senegal Mission Director Peter Trenchard. “Solar water pumps are cost-effective and bolster water security and resilience to climate change.”

USAID will support water and equipment providers to convert diesel-powered water pumps with solar-powered ones, which will lower operating costs, improve service quality, and ultimately help rural communities access water in a financially and environmentally sustainable manner.

Grant applications will be accepted starting on Earth Day, April 22, 2022 until July 1, 2022. To learn more about the full eligibility requirements and how to submit an application, interested parties can attend an informational webinar on May 25, 2022. USAID will announce grant winners in October 2022.

As a high priority country under the U.S. Global Water Strategy, USAID supports Senegal’s efforts to achieve universal access to water and sanitation, and inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
