The United States, through USAID, intends to provide $800,000 in humanitarian assistance to meet the immediate needs of those affected by devastating floods in Brazil’s southern Rio Grande do Sul state. This brings the total USAID humanitarian assistance in response to the recent floods in Brazil to $1 million. Widespread flooding and landslides resulting from heavy rain that began in late April have affected nearly 2.3 million people and displaced more than 540,000 individuals in southern Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul State.
This funding will help meet immediate shelter management needs and provide critical protection services for those displaced from their homes and seeking emergency shelter as a result of the flood, as well as support targeted multipurpose cash assistance to affected households.
This funding is in addition to the $200,000 already provided by USAID to help facilitate access to clean water for individuals affected by the flooding in southern Brazil, as well as provide cleaning supplies, hygiene kits, and training on safe water, sanitation, and hygiene practices. This immediate assistance also is supporting psychosocial and mental health support for almost 5,000 individuals in shelters in 13 municipalities.
